Appendix E — Thirty causal thought experiments 
Every scenario is fictional and is labeled by what it illustrates rather than asserted as canon. 
E.1 Joint-cause tissue 
An SF1 tissue appears only when the joint condition x∧¬y is the designated PA basis. Removing either 
constituent destroys that joint-cause attribution even if some similar tissue can arise another way. Lesson: 
PA irreducibility. 
E.2 Stage-2 route separation 
At SF2, three tissues are visually similar, but one traces to inherited SF1, one to standalone PAx, and one to 
standalone PA¬y. Lesson: phenotype similarity does not prove causal identity. 
E.3 Inherited non-SM1 gate 
A Stage-2 regulatory gate is active only because IH¬SM1 is present. Lesson: inherited non-state can be 
causally productive without being a PA mode. 
E.4 Stage-3 source sensitivity 
A cell responds differently to IH¬SM2 than it did to inherited ¬SM1. Lesson: source index can matter. 
E.5 Boolean redundancy, causal novelty 
The bare statement ¬SM8 is already implied by a stronger lower exclusion, but a protein complex specifically 
recognizes a biological marker associated with the IH source ¬SM8. Lesson: projection redundancy need not 
be causal redundancy. 
E.6 Delayed maturation 
An SF7 structure is established at stage acquisition but reaches its adult form only after ordinary puberty 
progresses. Lesson: stage acquisition and maturation separate. 
E.7 Permanent stage ceiling 
An Archfemale never passes SF5, yet ages from childhood to adulthood and continues to mature. Lesson: 
permanent Archstage stagnation is not biological arrest. 
E.8 Same stage, different age 
Two SF8 subjects are ages 13 and 30. They share stage but not maturity. Lesson: stage does not determine 
age. 
E.9 Same maturity, different stage 
Two adult Archfemales are SF3 and SF20. Both are sexually mature. Lesson: maturity does not determine 
stage. 
E.10 Hidden microanatomy 
SF15 produces no obvious external difference but creates a stage-specific microvascular network. Lesson: 
visibility is not required.
